Probio is a developer of high-performance, eco-friendly, probiotic products for household cleaning, home maintenance, pet wellness and food waste composting. These products have been designed as a smarter, more effective, more sustainable and healthier alternative to harsher chemical variations.

Probio are longstanding specialists in the field of probiotic science and technology. Founded in 2010 by scientist Rupert van der Merwe, and run by a dedicated team of microbiologists and product developers, we boast over 20 years of research in agriculture and probiotic technology. Our team are pioneers in the field. We have expertly crafted a range of products aimed at improving the lives of our customers while contributing to a more sustainable planet.

It all started when Rupert was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis in the 1980s. To keep his symptoms in check, he had to dramatically change his lifestyle. This led to him starting an apprenticeship at a biodynamic farm in Wellington – the first fully organic farm in South Africa. Through eating the organic produce and being in a chemical-free environment, his health dramatically improved, sparking his interest in soil and agriculture. When his apprenticeship was over, he enrolled at the University of Stellenbosch to study the science of soil. It was here that he came to love probiotics, their use in agriculture, and the abundant positive effects they have on human and animal health and hygiene.

Rupert’s testimony forms the basis of our company's philosophy: To improve the health and wellbeing of our customers and the planet by using nature’s own technology. Our advanced production facility, with full environmental control and on-site laboratory, is based in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
